* — Pāraṇam (completing the fast by taking water and food) is to be performed during standard period of time: after sunrise and before the first fifth of the daylight ends. Pāraṇam time could be calculated with “Vaiṣṇavaṁ Pañchāṅgam” software.
< — Pāraṇam must be done before the time specified (in 24-hour format)
> — Pāraṇam must be done after the time specified (in 24-hour format)
HV > — The last quater of Ekādaśī-tithi (Hari-vāsara) starts from the time specified (in 24-hour format). If the starting time is after the midnight, the following date is mentioned with the time. The last quater of Ekādaśī-tithi is considered to be Hari-vāsara and should be strictly observed with Ekādaśī vows even when the observation of Ekādaśī fast follows the next day.
Pārśva-parivartinī Ekādaśī
Parivartinī is translated as “turning”. This ekādashī marks the middle of Cāturmāsya, the day when Viṣṇu turns over onto His other side in His yoga-nidrā, all-cognizant sleep. On this day the vows of the 2nd month of Cāturmāsya (abstinence from fermented dairy products) are completed, and observance of the vows of the 3d month (fast from milk, kṣīra-vratam) begins.
The end of the 2nd month of Cāturmāsya and the beginning of the vows of the 3d month (kṣīra-vratam)
On Parivartinī ekādashī the vows of the 2nd month of Cāturmāsya (abstinence from fermented dairy products) are completed, and observance of the vows of the 3d month (fast from milk, Kṣīra-vratam) begins. To mark auspicious accomplishment of the fast, it is common on Dvādashī (or on Trayodashī, if the fast lasts for two days in succession) to cook rice with dadhi (yoghurt), offer it to Bhagavān Vāmana and, having fed the worthy, take it for pāraṇa as a sign of Dadhi-vrata and Ekādashī-vrata completion.
Kṣīra-vratam refers to any unfermented, uncurdled milk, even as an ingredient of complex dishes — if it is not curdled in the process of cooking. It implies abstinence from milk, cream, milk powder, condensed milk, sweet cream butter, khoi, gulabjamunas, etc.
Dadhi-vrata-samarpaṇam (offering dadhi-vrata to Bhagavān):
सङ्कर्षण नमस्तुभ्यं श्रवणे मत्कृतेन च ।
दधिव्रतेन देवेश तुष्टो भव जनार्द्दन ॥
saṅkarṣaṇa namas tubhyaṁ śravaṇe matkṛtena ca •
dadhi-vratena deveśa tuṣṭa bhava janārddana ••
“Saṅkarṣaṇa! namaḥ unto You: be pleased with dadhi-vrata which I observed in Śravaṇa month, Deveśa, Janārddana!”
Kṣīra-vrata-saṇkalpam (taking the vow of kṣīra-vrata):
प्रद्युम्न तव तुष्ट्यर्त्थं प्रोष्ठपद्यां तृतीयके ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु देवेश करिष्येऽहं पयोव्रतम् ॥
pradyumna tava tuṣṭyartthaṁ proṣṭhapadyāṁ tṛtīyake •
nirvighnaṁ kuru deveśa kariṣye ’haṁ payo-vratam ••
“Pradyumna! I will observe milk fast for Your pleasure on the third month, Bhādrapada month. Deveśa! Rid me of obstacles.”
Dadhi-Vāmana-jayantī
**Vāmana-jayantī, the day of appearance of Bhagavān Vāmana, also known as Dadhi-Vāmana-jayantī due to the completion of dadhi-vrata, abstinence from fermented dairy products. Every manvantara, i.e. 14 times in a day of Brahmā, Śrī-Viṣṇu appears as a younger brother of Indra to protect him and to rule the world through him. Oblation to Śrī-Vāmana is performed by remembrance, kīrtana, and offering rice with dadhi (yoghurt).
If Vāmana-jayantī falls on the day of Ekādashī-vrata or Dvādashī-vrata, then the offering is to be done on the next day prior to pāraṇa (consummation of the fast)
Śravaṇā Dvādaśī
Dvādaśī-tithi in conjunction with Śravaṇā-nakṣatra from the rise of Sūrya till noon brings forth Śravaṇā Dvādaśī, a day of the same vows as a Śuddhā Ekādaśī. Dvādaśī is a Hari-vāsara, and Śravaṇā is a Hari-nakṣatra, therefore their conjunction is particularly worshipable for vaiṣṇavas. If such a conjunction occurs on the next day after a pure Ekādaśī, then fasting must be observed for two days at a time.
द्वादशीं श्रवणोपेतां यो नोपोष्यात् सुमन्दधीः ।
पञ्चसंवत्सरकृतं पुण्यं तस्य विनश्यति ॥
dvādaśīṁ śravaṇopetāṁ yo nopoṣyāt sumandadhīḥ •
pañća-saṁvatsara-kṛtaṁ puṇyaṁ tasya vinaśyati ••
“If any fool doesn't fast on the Dvādaśī conjugated with Śravaṇā, then his puṇya, amassed for five years, will be destroyed.” (Kṛṣṇāmṛta-mahārṇavam, 160)
After Śuddhā Ekādaśī one may take pāraṇa by water and continue fasting, but one doesn't have to, since the objective as well as the devatā of both vratas is One and the Same.
Ananta-ćaturdaśī
Viṣṇu is invoked under the name of Ananta-Padmanābha into a water vessel and worshipped by a special adoration with offering of 14 various dishes, whereupon a great feast is held. Ananta-ćaturdaśī-vrata is of particular importance for seekers of knowledge and wisdom.
